USS JOHN C STENNIS, At Sea – The Second Class Petty Officer Association (SCPOA) aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) are organizing seasonal holiday gift giveaway events for E-5 and below Sailors beginning Dec. 7.

The goal of these events is to bring junior Sailors together for some holiday fun even though they are deployed to U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations (AOR).

“We want to show that we all take care of each other and acknowledge the hard work everyone does to keep the ship running,” said Cryptology Technician (Technical) 2nd Class Ronnie Giorgione, SCPOA event coordinator, from Las Vegas. “This is our big thank you to the crew.

The SCPOA used more than $7,000 from a previous pie-in-the-face fundraiser to purchase enough for weekly gift giveaways while out at sea and one grand prize each day during port visits in December.

“We were able to purchase all of the gifts we needed in less than a day at the Navy Exchange at the Naval Support Activity in Bahrain,” said Gunner’s Mate 2nd Class Kalifornia Hartsfield, SCPOA event coordinator, from Los Angeles.

To make the events more enjoyable, Sailors will be invited to participate in game show themed activities for small prizes such as phone cards to call home to friends and families for the holidays.

“We want everybody to look forward to these events and experience something unique even if they don’t win something,” said Ship’s Serviceman 2nd Class Brian Walker, SCPOA president, from Newark, N.J. “Our goal is for everyone to leave with a story they want to tell to their friends and family back home.”

The first gift giveaway took place Dec. 7 with more than $1,000 in prizes passed out to random Sailors.
